Blog Wrap Up 1. Tell me something you learned about another culture this term that really surprised you or intrigued you.       One of my favorite cultures was actually India/Indonesian. I feel like we got to experience so many different instruments we did not know about all in one, because of the Gamelan. I like how all of the instruments work together to create one distinct sound. To me, all the instruments sounded so good together. I liked researching about the film industry in Indonesia as well in my cool stuff blog. I enjoyed hearing the metallic layers of this music. The shadow puppets show also intrigued me a lot.  2. Tell me something you realized about your own culture through our discussions.       I realized that my own culture is actually very similar to the other cultures we studied this semester. We have our own instruments and rich traditions that are passed down by ge...

Cool Stuff Blog #3 Kendang Barrel Drum       For the past few days, we have been discussing East and Southeast Asian culture, as well as their music. This has by far been my favorite culture we have studied. When we learned about the gamelan and watched videos on it, I enjoyed the sounds the harmony of the instruments together. The instrument that I thought was the most interesting was the Kendang barrel drum. This double headed drum has a wooden body with a buffalo hide drum head. This instrument is classified as a membranophone because it produces sound by a vibration of the stretched skin. This video I found shows a guy playing the Barrel drum to the popular song "Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran.  Shadow Puppet Theatre Shows      Along with the Gamelan, I was also fascinated about the fact that shadow puppets shows are popular in this area. Another word for shadow puppets is Wayang and it means shadow. These puppe...
Music and Family Blog      For the music and family blog, I chose to interview my mom Amy Hardin because I swear she has been to the most concerts out of everyone that I know and she listens to a variety of genres of music. Plus, I knew she would not give me short answers like my dad would.  Me: Hey Mom! May I interview you for a project for my Music of Diverse Cultures class?  Mom: Of course. Me: Where did you grow up? Mom: I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky until I was 13. Then, moved to Landrum, South Carolina and have been there ever since.  Me: What kind of music did you grow up with? What did it mean to the people around you? Did music have any particular function? When and where did you listen? Mom: In Kentucky I went to a very strict Baptist church and Christian school where rock music was really frowned upon. I remember them even having bonfires where they burn records of hard rock music they thought was from the devil. B...

Cool Stuff Blog #3 Qanun      This week we have experienced the music and culture of the Arab World and India. These are two of the cultures that I knew the least about. I wasn't even sure where the Arab World was. Now, I have a good idea of how the music sounds there and how the culture is similar and different to ours and others we have already learned.       My favorite part of learning about a new culture in this class is getting to listen to the diverse instruments that we hear. We learned about many instruments that are popular in the Arab World and I discovered my new favorite, which was the Qanun. This instrument is a wooden trapezoid shaped that are plucked with plectrums made of turtle shell or plastic. The Qanun has a beautiful sound and it reminds me a lot of the inside of a piano but sounds similar to a harp. It has 78 strings and the strings are made of nylon or traditionally, animal's gut.  Indian Film Industr...

Cool Stuff Blog #2 Gourd Folk Fiddle      The Gourd Folk Fiddle was created in 19th century Maryland. The fiddle and the bow it is played with were from the slave cultural tradition on the American Plantation. The instrument was made from a skin top nailed to the body of a gourd with fifty five iron nails. It also has two slit sound holes. There is nothing extraordinary about the bow; it looks like a normal bow you would see with a violin.  I find it fascinating that instruments can be created out of gourds and still have such a beautiful sound. The Gourd Folk Fiddle sounds very similar to a violin and the way it is played on the shoulder reminds me very much of a violin. This instrument is most commonly seen in Black American Blues music.  Lollapalooza Chile 2020      Concerts and festivals are something that I really enjoy attending. Thousands of fans listening to the same artist(s) scr...
Music And Gender      Growing up, I knew that I wasn't like every other girl my age. I grew up playing with toy cars and playing as many sports as you think can of. I didn't like what every other traditional girl likes when they're younger. Traditionally, little girls are into dolls, barbies and getting dressed up. I hated dressing up more than anything and I still do to this day. My parents always tried to encourage me to be like every other girl my age but that didn't work.       I vaguely remember asking for a drum set for a couple years for Christmas because my older cousin, Jacob had one. I thought playing the drums would be the coolest thing especially since I was a girl. My parents quickly shot down my hope for getting a drum set every time I asked. I am not sure if it was because they weren't used to seeing girls play the drums or because they're just so loud. I'd say probably both. I still have hope that I ...

Cool Stuff Blog #1 Lindsey Hardin ALGAITA       The point of this blog is to find three things that I find interesting and three things that I want to learn more about from the Native American culture or the Sub-Saharan African culture. I am always fascinated to learn about new instruments and the sounds they make. The first thing fascinating I found was an instrument that was played in Sub-Saharan Africa called the Algaita. The Oboe is an instrument that you may know that most closely resembles the Algaita. Like the Oboe, it has many finger holes and a wide opening at the end. This instrument is played mainly at festivities and/or ceremonies. You play this instrument by putting your mouth on the circular piroutte and blowing through the double reed. The Algaita is a type of aerophone because it is an instrument that produces sound by the instrument vibrating by itself.  JINGLE DRESS       The Jingle Dress sparke...
