Blog Wrap Up


1. Tell me something you learned about another culture this term that really surprised you or intrigued you. 
     One of my favorite cultures was actually India/Indonesian. I feel like we got to experience so many different instruments we did not know about all in one, because of the Gamelan. I like how all of the instruments work together to create one distinct sound. To me, all the instruments sounded so good together. I liked researching about the film industry in Indonesia as well in my cool stuff blog. I enjoyed hearing the metallic layers of this music. The shadow puppets show also intrigued me a lot. 

2. Tell me something you realized about your own culture through our discussions. 
     I realized that my own culture is actually very similar to the other cultures we studied this semester. We have our own instruments and rich traditions that are passed down by generations like other cultures. I realized that the music I listen to that I think is from my culture really may not be and it might be from another culture. 
    

3. Tell me about a couple of things you liked/a couple of things you wish could have been different. 

     One thing I really liked about this class is the fact that it was understandable even for non-music majors. I thought before this class that I wouldn't know much of what you were talking about, but I really did understand more than I thought I would. Another thing I enjoyed was the Youtube videos. I feel like the best way to learn another culture is to watch a video on it and I am glad we got to watch plenty. The only thing I did not enjoy was having to buy the textbook. I feel like it didn't help that much. I learned more through discussion and through the blogs. 


4. Tell me something that this course has inspired you to learn about. 

     This course helped me develop an open mind to getting to know more about other cultures. I forget sometimes that America is so completely different than other cultures in so many different aspects. Sometimes we forget about that so it is nice that we got to study and open our minds to the music of other places. This class also inspired me to want to travel more. When Dr. Weeks showed us pictures from his travels, it made me wish I was there to experience other countries as well.

Cool Stuff Blog #3 Qanun      This week we have experienced the music and culture of the Arab World and India. These are two of the cultures that I knew the least about. I wasn't even sure where the Arab World was. Now, I have a good idea of how the music sounds there and how the culture is similar and different to ours and others we have already learned.       My favorite part of learning about a new culture in this class is getting to listen to the diverse instruments that we hear. We learned about many instruments that are popular in the Arab World and I discovered my new favorite, which was the Qanun. This instrument is a wooden trapezoid shaped that are plucked with plectrums made of turtle shell or plastic. The Qanun has a beautiful sound and it reminds me a lot of the inside of a piano but sounds similar to a harp. Music And Gender      Growing up, I knew that I wasn't like every other girl my age. I grew up playing with toy cars and playing as many sports as you think can of. I didn't like what every other traditional girl likes when they're younger. Traditionally, little girls are into dolls, barbies and getting dressed up. I hated dressing up more than anything and I still do to this day. My parents always tried to encourage me to be like every other girl my age but that didn't work.       I vaguely remember asking for a drum set for a couple years for Christmas because my older cousin, Jacob had one. I thought playing the drums would be the coolest thing especially since I was a girl. My parents quickly shot down my hope for getting a drum set every time I asked.
