Kendang Barrel Drum
For the past few days, we have been discussing East and Southeast Asian culture, as well as their music. This has by far been my favorite culture we have studied. When we learned about the gamelan and watched videos on it, I enjoyed the sounds the harmony of the instruments together. The instrument that I thought was the most interesting was the Kendang barrel drum. This double headed drum has a wooden body with a buffalo hide drum head. This instrument is classified as a membranophone because it produces sound by a vibration of the stretched skin. This video I found shows a guy playing the Barrel drum to the popular song "Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran.
Shadow Puppet Theatre Shows
Along with the Gamelan, I was also fascinated about the fact that shadow puppets shows are popular in this area. Another word for shadow puppets is Wayang and it means shadow. These puppets are controlled by someone known as the dalang. These Indonesian performances are among the greatest traditions of story telling in the world. This video just shows a little bit more of shadow puppet theatre. I think watching one of these in person would be fascinating and different than anything I have ever experienced.
We The Fest Music Festival
Music festivals in other countries are something that I do not know much about. I enjoy researching them because popular artists here attend many of the major music festivals in other countries. I found a popular music festival in Jakarta, Indonesia called We The Fest. It has not only just music, but arts, fashion, and food as well. The first ever festival was held in 2014 and has been a tradition ever since. The genres of music range from Pop music to hip hop to rock music. Last year, artists such as, Rae Sremmurd, 6LACK, Daniel Caesar, and Alvvays performed.
I also really like shadow puppet theatre and think that it is super cool. I would love to watch a live show one day!
ReplyDeleteI really thought that the concept of the shadow puppets was extremely interesting as well. The amount of coordination that’s needed to control the puppets is unbelievable. I’ve always been a huge fan of music festivals so it was really nice to hear about “We the Fest.” It interesting that they also focus on other art forms as well.
ReplyDeleteLike the previous comments, I think the shadow puppets are extremely cool!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I'm always surprised at the number of videos out there where folks do covers of popular American/Brit rock on their traditional instruments. It's so neat! And I'm happy to have the video of the shadow puppets--I'm looking to upgrade from the DVD I showed this year, and so I'm bookmarking this one.
