Global Music Autobiography

Global Music Autobiography

Throughout my life, I have never really thought much about how unique music is from other parts of the world. I do not have any friends or family who live out of the United States nor have I ever been outside of the United States. My goal is to eventually travel to many countries so I get to experience as many different parts of the world as possible. There is so many things that I do not know about other parts of the world. Sadly, I do have a lack of knowledge about diverse cultures. Hopefully after taking the class Music of Diverse Cultures, my knowledge of music and other places outside the United States will strengthen. Finding new music is truly a passion of mine and this class will definitely help me discover songs I have never heard before.

The one culture that I know some music from is Spain. I took three years of Spanish in High School which helped me realize my love for Spanish music. We would always find a new artist every week and listen to a couple songs by them. This helped me discover a passion for new artists. I enjoy Spanish artists such as Enrique Iglesias, Nicky Jam, Cardi B, Luis Fonsi, and Shakira. In high school, many people in my class were able to take a trip to Spain for a week to delve deeper into their culture and discover their way of life. Looking back, I regret not taking that opportunity to experience that country since it is very unique compared to what I am used to.

one of my favorite songs: El Perdon

From taking Spanish in high school, I found some songs that I listen to often: El Perdon by Nicky Jam and Bailiando by Enrique Iglesias.

Some of my music taste also comes from the United Kingdom. I found bands and artists such as Coldplay, The Beatles, Def Leppard and John Lennon because my dad frequently liked to listen to these bands so I learned to love them as well.

My friends showed me newer artists such as Ed Sheeran, Adele, Sam Smith, and Lewis Capaldi. These four artists are also pop singers from the United Kingdom.

I am really excited that I get the opportunity to discover diverse cultures and the music that goes along with it. I can't wait to strengthen my passion of discovering new music this semester.

  1. Have you ever listened to Selena Quintanilla-Perez? She is an American singer and songwriter. Because of her spanish roots, her music incorporats a lot of the spanish heritage. Just reading about your influence in spanish made me think of her. I never knew how much I enjoyed spanish music until spanish class and my trip to California. I can't wait to discover new music either! It is quite fascinating.
