Music and Religion/Philosophy

From an early age, my parents always tried to instill into my head that religion is going to be an important aspect of my life. I grew up going to two different Baptist churches almost every single Sunday morning and occasionally Wednesday nights as well. Sadly, being in college makes it difficult  to attend church every weekend. I do not have much experience with other religions and I have never been to a Catholic, Protestant, or Evangelical church. Although, I did I grow up being friends with many people of different religions and now go to school with people of many religions as well.  My best friend is Buddhist and I really enjoy when she teaches me about how different it is from my religion.

The central focus of the Baptist Church is salvation through faith in God alone. Baptists believe that when they worship through praise and prayer they are offering themselves to God in thanks for his love. God and his people speak with each other through worship and his people sing to glorify Him

Baptist singing is by far my favorite part of going to church. A lot of the songs I hear in church end up on my playlist that same day. Singing is not something I am good at by any means but at church, I enjoy attempting to sing without anyone hearing me, of course. Two of my favorite traditions that baptist churches participate in is baptism and communion. Baptism is a testimony to the believer's faith in the final resurrection of the dead. Communion is a Christian sacrament in which bread and wine are consumed to remember Christ's death.

Hymns are sang often at my church. hymn is a type of song, usually religious, specifically written for the purpose of adoration or prayer, and typically addressed to a deity or deities, or to a prominent figure or personification. A few of my favorite hymns to sing are "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing," "At The Cross," and "Blessed Be Your Name."

“Blessed Be Your Name” lyrics represents a response to suffering that may not feel natural but is faithful. The more we worship God in and out of suffering, the more we form a response of praise in any circumstance.

Blessed Be Your Name
In the land that is plentiful
Where Your streams of abundance flow
Blessed be Your name

Blessed Be Your name
When I’m found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed Be Your name

Every blessing You pour out
I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

  1. I have not heard much of religious music, but you make it sound interesting. It is a shame that you could not go to church as much as you like to because of college, but you can always make time for it.

  2. It is cool that your best friend has a religion you really don't know much about because then you have a chance to learn something new. I also have hymn/songs in my religion as a Catholic.

  3. Blessed be your Name is a very popular song for the elders in my church and sometimes it has been played, but my church is definitely more contemporary. I also learned somethings about Buddhism and I agree that it is interesting and I have even brought in some Buddhist traditions into my Christianity.

  4. I've never been to a Baptist church but it sounds like the music is very pretty and it is very cool that your open to other people's religion. I'm Catholic and I have never been to a Baptist church so I'm not sure how similar they are but we also sing hymns.

  5. I also attended a Baptist church but I was very surprised by how different our music sounds. It's so cool that you have a friend from another religion that teaches you about it, being openminded is a great trait to have.

  6. I have never been to a Baptist church service, however, one of the high schools I attended was at a Baptist church and they had chapel. I really like that you included the words and a well written explanation of a truly great hymn.
